Meditation on Psalm 46

Meditation on Psalm 46

Last night’s psalm was Psalm 46 which wonderfully states this: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” (v. 1-2, NIV)  A refuge is a place of safety and peace.  The living God is your refuge.  He will also give you strength to face whatever comes your way during this time of crisis.  He is “an ever-present help in trouble”.  Hallelujah!

“Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.  The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” (v. 6-7)   Nations are literally in an uproar right now.  The pandemic has brought the world as we knew it to a halt.  So what should our response be?  “The LORD Almighty is with us”!  Almighty God who made heaven and earth is with us, His chosen people.  He is with you and will never forsake you.  So do not fear, for the Lord your God is by your side.

The psalmist finishes by writing this: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.  The LORD Almighty is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress.”(46:10-11)  Are you taking time to be still?  Are your heart and mind at rest?  This is God’s will for you.  It comes from knowing that He is indeed God, the Maker of heaven and earth.  He knows the end from the beginning.  Nothing takes Him by surprise.  He has you in the palm of His hand.  He sent His one and only Son to redeem you and to bring you to Himself, so that you could be at peace and feel protected.  He will exalt Himself in the earth today.  He will exalt Himself in your life as well as you put your trust in Him.

So let us agree that no matter what befalls us, “we will not fear”.  May you take time to quiet your heart and soul in His presence, and thus feel the reality of this truth.  You can be still and at peace, for the Almighty God is your God.

Father, I want to know you as my refuge and fortress.  Please help me to be still, to be at peace and calm in You.  I give you all my cares and worries.  I praise you that You have all things under control in my life and in this upside down world right now.  May the knowledge of who You are fill my mind and heart.  I welcome your peace.  Amen.
